Background of the Study
Discourse markers—linguistic elements that guide the flow of conversation—play a pivotal role in structuring Nigerian English. Over generations, these markers have evolved, reflecting changes in language use driven by cultural, technological, and educational influences (Adejumo, 2023). In Nigerian English, discourse markers such as “you know,” “like,” and “I mean” have undergone semantic shifts and adaptations, influencing the coherence and clarity of everyday communication. This evolution is particularly evident when comparing the language use of older and younger speakers, with each generation contributing new markers and retiring outdated ones (Olubayo, 2024). The study examines how these changes have impacted communication patterns, social interactions, and linguistic identity across different age groups. The evolution of discourse markers offers a window into broader societal changes and the dynamic nature of language as a living entity, continuously shaped by context and usage (Adejumo, 2023). Through detailed linguistic analysis and cross-generational comparisons, the research aims to map the trajectory of discourse marker evolution in Nigerian English and its implications for future communication trends.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of discourse markers in Nigerian English, there is limited research on their evolution across generations. Existing studies often focus on static descriptions of language use, failing to account for the dynamic shifts that occur over time (Olubayo, 2024). This gap hinders our understanding of how generational language practices affect discourse coherence and social interaction. The study seeks to address this deficiency by investigating the changes in discourse markers, exploring the factors driving these changes, and assessing their impact on communication efficacy in Nigerian English.
Objectives of the Study
To document the evolution of discourse markers in Nigerian English.
To analyze generational differences in marker usage.
To evaluate the impact of these changes on communication.
Research Questions
How have discourse markers in Nigerian English evolved over time?
What differences exist between generations regarding marker usage?
How do these changes affect discourse coherence?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides insights into the dynamic evolution of discourse markers in Nigerian English, offering valuable implications for linguistics and education. The findings will help researchers, educators, and communication professionals understand how language adapts over time and inform strategies to enhance communication clarity (Adejumo, 2023; Olubayo, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the evolution of discourse markers in Nigerian English and does not extend to other varieties of English or languages.
